The history of pelmeni

Pelmeni are dumplings of Russian cuisine that consist of a filling wrapped in thin, unleavened dough. It is debated whether they originated in Ural or Siberia. Pelmeni have been described as "the heart of Russian cuisine".

In modern Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian culture, store-bought pelmeni are considered a kind of convenience food associated with students' or bachelors' lifestyles, much like instant ramen, while home-made pelmeni are considered hearty, healthy food.

Originating among the indigenous Finno-Ugric and Turkic people, pelmeni was created as a convenient and portable food source that could withstand the harsh winter conditions of the region. Over time, pelmeni spread across Eastern Europe, evolving with regional influences.

  • Flavor: Mild non-leavened boiled dough is contrasted with a rich and savory filling of ground meat and onions.

  • Texture: The soft boiled dough is filled with a ground meat filling, making for an explosion of texture in your mouth.

  • Time: From preparation to table, these dumplings take from 2 to 3 hours to make.

Pelmeni are more than just a meal, they are a piece of Siberian heritage that brings warmth and joy to any table. Whether you're enjoying them on a cold winter night or introducing them to friends at a dinner party, these delightful dumplings are sure to become a favorite.

So why not give them a try and experience the delicious tradition of pelmeni for yourself?

Pelmeni making is an incredibly social affair, you NEVER make them alone! Traditionally all women of the extended family would gather to make pelmeni. They would make loads and loads and then freeze the lot, which would last them through winter.

We advise everyone to try pelmeni! You won't regret it!

xoxo
